Some history

The rich historical legacy of Southern Delaware reaches all the way back to Colonial America. Lewes, called “The First Town in the First State”, was originally settled by the Dutch in 1631 as a whaling and trading center. Fort Miles, one of Cape Henlopen State Park’s principal landmarks, was crucial to the defense of our nation’s coastlines during the Second World War. Additional sites of historical importance in Cape Henlopen include five observation towers that once served to spot enemy German submarines. Come and explore our other fascinating landmarks!
